Frequently Asked Questions

Are any of the programs you recommend covered by medical insurance or Medicaid?2016-09-29T18:42:17+00:00

Many of the programs and schools recommended have clinical staff that are licensed therapists. Some insurance companies reimburse families for the counseling services that are provided. Some families have been able to recover at least a portion of the cost of counseling services.

Another option to consider is using a Health Savings or Flexible Spending Account to pay for therapy using pre-tax dollars. It ultimately hinges on the family’s individual insurance plan.

We encourage you to speak with your insurance company first with any concerns or questions you may have about residential and /or wilderness treatment options.

Some of the programs and schools are now working with insurance advocates, and this may be an option to explore as well once you know where your child will be attending.

When you have Medicaid and are searching for programs that accept this insurance, please contact your provider directly. Unfortunately, we don’t have listings of programs or schools that accept Medicaid.

Most private residential therapy programs typically will only accept PPO insurance.

Are the treatment centers and wilderness programs you recommend safe?2016-09-29T18:43:08+00:00

Your child, teen’s and young adult’s safety is one of our top priorities.

To ensure the recommendation of each program, we have visited and evaluated them, beyond just the admissions and marketing desk.

Safety needs to be the primary concern of any top-notch program or school.

Parents will be given questions to ask when interviewing programs and schools, which include safety measures the program takes and you always have the right to ask for written documentation of these procedures.

Do you have program and school recommendations for funding offered by the Adoption Assistance Program?2019-10-17T05:57:33+00:00

Federal subsidies were created by Congress (through Public Law 96-272 – the Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare Act of 1980) to encourage the adoption of special needs children and remove the financial disincentives for families to adopt.

Recognizing that adoptive parents often experience financial difficulty meeting the special needs of children who formerly were placed in California’s foster care system, the State Legislature created the Adoption Assistance Program (AAP). In creating the program, the Legislature intended to benefit children in foster care by providing the security and stability of a permanent home through adoption. Children may receive a federally funded subsidy under Title IV-E or a state-funded subsidy per state guidelines. To apply for the AAP, adoptive families must submit a completed Request for Adoption Assistance ( AAP 1 ) form which is provided by their licensed adoption agency.

The responsible public agency will determine the child’s special needs eligibility for participation in the program. When the child is deemed eligible, the responsible public agency will negotiate a signed adoption assistance agreement, or a deferred adoption assistance agreement will be executed with the adoptive parents, prior to the adoption finalization. A reassessment of the child’s needs and family’s circumstances is conducted every two years.

The amount of financial assistance is determined based upon the special needs of the child and circumstances of the family. An adopted child who receives AAP benefits from California may move anywhere in the world and still receive monthly subsidy payments until the age of 18 or 21, when the child has a mental or physical disability.

AAP will require that the program or school you find for your child be a non-profit.

We have assisted many families in securing a best fit placement for their adopted child to meet all of their academic, behavioral, clinical and family support needs.

How long will my child or young adult be in treatment?2016-09-07T15:39:29+00:00

Good question and one that most parents (and students) want to know!

The duration of your adolescent’s or young adult’s treatment program will depend largely on their individual and specific needs.

After your teen or young adult has been assessed by the program staff, they will determine the length of their treatment program.

How many programs / schools will we get as recommendations?2018-01-30T16:03:15+00:00

We have an ideal number in place that works for the process!

It will vary depending on the specifics of what your needs may be.

Residential Treatment Centers and Therapeutic Boarding Schools are numerous all across the United States. These types of programs and schools will have a larger selection and you may be provided anywhere from three to seven choices.

There are always variables we need to work with around the specific situation at hand.

For example, should you be working with an Adoption Assistance Program or School District that is providing funding, they usually require a non-profit program or school.

Speciality Psychiatric and Behavioral Hospitals will be fewer because of specialization.

Wilderness Therapy Programs can vary depending on the age of the child, teen or young adult and any other specific needs they may have such as addiction factors, alcohol / drug usage, ASD, mental health disorders, mood disorders, etc.

Young Adult Transition Programs and Substance Abuse Programs have quite a few choices and will vary on the age of the young adult and any specific requirements that need to be met.

College Prep Boarding Schools have quite a few choices and can meet various needs around the special interests and needs of the students such as academic aspirations, art / dance / drama, equine, learning challenges, military, outdoor adventure, robotics, sports, etc.

We will gather specifics from you during the intake call and make sure we are recommending those program that are a best fit for your child, teen or young adult.

How long have the programs / schools you recommend been in business?2017-10-01T17:31:40+00:00

We are very selective about the programs and schools we recommend.

We do not recommend brand new programs or schools. All programs and schools need to have been in operation no less than 3 years.

Occasionally a new program or school will open as an offspring from another program or school and therefore appear to be new. All of this information is disclosed to you in the recommendation.

How much do these programs, schools and wilderness programs cost?2019-10-17T05:57:33+00:00

First – Please visit the page – Finding the Right Program!

Effective therapeutic residential and wilderness programs as well as young adult transitional living programs, offer comprehensive and highly individualized services and varying lengths of stay, therefore, enrollment costs depend upon a number of personal factors.

To get the most accurate possible picture of the expenses associated with a program or school, we will give you the most recently known tuition as a part of your service package. It is always best to contact the program directly for any recent changes regarding tuition and enrollment fees. The admissions staff will be happy to work with you to develop a detailed financial picture based upon your family’s unique needs when you inquire about their program.

My child is on an IEP and is being funded by the school district. Do you have non-profit recommendations?2016-09-07T16:08:13+00:00

Yes, we do!

Currently, IDEA states that public school districts only have to provide special education services to students in private placements when the district has referred the student to an out-of-district placement.

These will need to be non-profit programs and schools, of which we are familiar.

Once my child, teen graduates their program and is coming home, are there referral sources for aftercare?2018-01-30T16:07:41+00:00

We have a list of aftercare programs / resources that you may obtain for $99. It takes about one hour of time to match your needs to your current situation.

Just reach out to your Team Member and they will supply you with recommendations of which you may call. This takes 24 to 48 hours.

Always make sure you check with the current program your child or young adults is enrolled in as well, as some have after care as a part of their program.

Horizon Family Solutions also offers an aftercare program that is customized to your specific needs. Please speak with Julie Forland,M.Ed about these services.

What are the steps I need to take to get started?2019-10-17T05:57:33+00:00

Good question!

Please start with thoroughly reading the ABOUT page, and then proceed on to the FINDING THE RIGHT PROGRAM PAGE, and then go to the GET STARTED NOW PAGE.

Here you will begin by filling out the Confidential Client Profile.(*)

For therapeutic needs, when you have a recent psychological evaluation, within the last 12 months, please have that ready to send us, should the request be made, when we schedule your intake phone call.

Also, current school transcripts can be beneficial for a quick review, so having those available may be helpful.

No release form is necessary as we will not be making calls to counselors, doctors, or health care professionals on your behalf. You will be able to list and write about your child, teen or young adults health and school needs on the client profile. The GET STARTED NOW PAGE will walk you through all the steps needed to engage in our professional services.

(*) Horizon Family Solutions is sponsoring the use of the client profile at this time.

Make sure you add “Help For Troubled Teen” in the email subject line.

What is your relationship with the programs and schools you are recommending?2018-01-30T16:08:51+00:00

Really good question!

Some companies may provide similar services, at no charge to the family, claiming to match troubled kids with an appropriate treatment program. Be aware that although some of these services represent themselves as independent, they may not be. They may actually be operated or paid by one or more of the treatment programs they are recommending. Always ask the service, especially when there is no cost to the family, whether it receives commissions or any type of payment compensation from the treatment programs they are recommending.

Help For Troubled Teen provides All Inclusive Flat rate services in which the family must make a reduced priced financial investment of $1,799.00

The programs and schools recommended have been and are currently being recommended by Horizon Family Solutions, which has been in business as an Educational Consulting / Therapeutic Consulting and Advocacy firm for almost 20 years.

Help For Troubled Teen is completely independent of any relationship with any program or school we recommend other than professional knowledge of the services they provide. We are not operated by nor do we get paid by or receive any compensation from any program or school we recommend. We feel doing it any other way would be professionally biased and could create an inappropriate placement for the child, teen or young adult.

What types of programs do you have available for recommendations?2017-10-01T17:52:39+00:00

We have many different types of appropriate schools and programs available and ready to recommend. To name a few:

Addiction Treatment Programs

Adoption / Attachment Schools

Aftercare / Transition Programs

Clinically Based Programs

College Prep-Boarding Schools

College Support Programs

Eating Disorder Programs

How long is the interview and consulting phone call?2019-10-17T05:57:33+00:00

This secondary call is after the client profile has been received, reviewed, agreement signed and returned and payment has been received.

Should the student / young adult be a part of the process, they will be invited into the last 30 minutes minutes of the call depending in the situation.

Will we have additional phone calls once the process takes place?2018-03-23T16:11:52+00:00

What is an Educational Consultant?2016-09-16T18:47:25+00:00

An educational consultant has the professional background to fully assess a child, teens or young adults’s academic, emotional and social needs and match them with the appropriate and best fit setting as well as with the most appropriate academic, clinical and support staff.

Why hire Help For Troubled Teen?2016-09-16T18:55:32+00:00

Anytime a program or school placement decision is being made, it is a big step, both emotionally and financially.

This is not a time to make a costly or emotionally taxing mistake. Our Team Members spend the time evaluating, researching and visiting programs and schools that are some of the very best in the United States. We also have visited lower cost programs and schools that we can recommend when a family has a certain financial need. Please make sure your Team Member knows about any specifics so we can assure you that we can help, before making payment.

Searching on the internet is not enough. We visit the programs and schools, tour the complete facility, meet those in attendance without staff present and interview the day staff as well as the night staff. We have the professional expertise to help you make well-informed, wise decisions that can positively affect your child’s future at this crucial and difficult time.

How long does it take to get the recommendations?2019-10-17T05:57:33+00:00

We do our best to make this process as streamlined as possible to meet your required needs!

Normally we require from 5 to 7 days to provide you all the detailed information. The intention of our approach to this professional service is detailed thoroughness.

Our team views each student and family as unique and deserving of a process that is careful, thorough and thoughtful. In order to provide recommendations that address the individual needs of each person, the initial phone call is most important as is all the written information in the student profile.

Our team then can carefully tailor to the goals, interests and needs of the family.

Thoroughness need not equate with a long, drawn out process. We have designed a very efficient approach to our research that allows us to move forward with a family’s desire for timely recommendations.

There are instances, generated by crises such as hospitalization, running away, sudden decline in performance or compliance that necessitate, in the interest of safety, a very rapid response. Our team will need to know this immediately, upfront, so as to assure our time is available to meet your needs. Again, we have honed a process that can, in these situations, allow for an almost immediate intervention for families who have paid for the services and submitted the student information. In any case, at the initial phone call we are able to discuss a realistic timeline that incorporates the family’s sense of urgency and our need for absolutely professional thoroughness in all recommendations.

What happens should I decide that I need full Educational Consulting services?2018-10-23T20:39:35+00:00

We are here to help!

At such time you feel the need to obtain full Educational / Therapeutic Consulting services from Horizon Family Solutions, please advise your Team Member.

They will advise Dr. Doré E. Frances and/or Julie Forland, M.ED. and will update them on your current situation. The earlier in the process you make this determination, the better for your family and student. Once your child / young adult is enrolled in their program, there can be a lot of catching up do to, and this can be very time consuming.

It is preferred that this commitment be made within the first one to two weeks your child / young adult is in treatment.

The original HFTT FULL service payment will be applied towards a full Educational Consulting service fee when this change in services is made within the first 30 days. Should this occur after 30 days, we will have a conversation with to work out an appropriate transfer of services and costs associated with the transfer.

We cannot retroactively change any agreements you have with the program / school in which your child / young adult is enrolled and will not be able to ask for any discounted rates or scholarships available.

Who could provide a Psychological Assessment report for my child should it be needed?2016-09-07T16:47:08+00:00

We are here to help!

We have access to some of the very best psychologists who can provide Confidential Psychological Assessment Reports either before your child or young adult is admitted to a program or while they are enrolled.

These professionals are able to come to your adolescent or young adult at your location prior to enrolling in a program or can meet them at their residential or wilderness program to complete the needed testing.

These clinical interviews can happen wherever you are located or wherever your teen or young adult may be in treatment. Please let us know during the process should you need a recommendation and after reviewing your needs we can make the proper recommendation based on your concerns, area of focus and specific needs.
